This one-week intensive course offers participants an opportunity to develop specialist-level knowledge in relation to litigating health-related rights at the national, regional, and international levels. During the course, globally renowned experts will lecture on a range topics, including: sexual and reproductive health and rights; rights issues arising in health-care settings; palliative care; approaches to health-care rationing and factors to consider in assessing the equity impacts of judgments; access to medicines and intellectual property; judicial legitimacy in deciding issues with budgetary and policy implications; and judicial effectiveness and impact of judgments. Confirmed instructors include professors from the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg), Harvard University (USA), and Georgetown University (USA), as well as leading practitioners from the World Bank, Disability Rights International, the Center for Reproductive Rights and Helen Keller International.
The course is conducted in English, is highly participatory, and uses case-based teaching and group exercises extensively. It will include a moot court competition, during which participants will argue the merits of a hypothetical case that focuses on a forward-looking health rights topic, as well as opportunities for networking and field trips within Washington, DC.
Past participants left the course encouraged, enlightened, and well-connected. The course is designed for PhD students, scholars, practitioners (e.g., law, public health, human rights or development), policy-makers, and advanced master’s students. The number of participants is restricted, and fellowships are limited.
