Overview / Información General:

The Pan American Journal of Public Health, published by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for an upcoming Special Issue on HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Treatment in the Region of the Americas: Achievements, Challenges and Perspectives. The Journal intends to publish the issue by December of 2016 with support from the HIV, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis and STI Unit at PAHO and other regional partners.

In recent years, the Region of the Americas has advanced with unprecedented results in its response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Countries have implemented the latest international guidelines and a wide range of new technologies aimed at preventing and treating the disease in all of its phases. Major achievements include the Region’s high level of antiretroviral treatment coverage (ART)—the highest among low- and middle-income countries—and improvements to the overall coverage of HIV screening and treatment.  Countries in the Region have also remained committed to the Dual Elimination Initiative of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV and Syphilis (MTCT), a target Cuba exceeded in 2015 when it became the first country to eliminate vertical HIV transmission.

Yet many challenges remain around the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS in the Region.  The number of new cases, late-stage diagnoses, and overall HIV-related deaths has not significantly dropped in recent years. Marginalized populations continue to be disproportionally affected, and long-term prevention, treatment and care strategies could be greatly improved.  Achieving future milestones, such as those outlined in the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets, will depend on strong regional collaboration and the continued allocation of resources at the country level. This special issue provides an opportunity to review and share the current situation around the Region’s response to HIV/AIDS. With a particular focus on the continuum of prevention, treatment and care, the issue aims to highlight both HIV/AIDS-related challenges and achievements. Subtopics within this issue include areas related to HIV combination prevention, testing services and overall strategies for delivering care. The Journal will accept original research papers, systematic reviews, opinion and analysis, special reports, brief communications, and/or letters to the editor. Articles may be submitted in Spanish, English, or Portuguese.  Authors should follow PAJPH’s instructions for authors and the cover letter must indicate that the paper is being submitted for the special issue on HIV/AIDS in the Region of the Americas.
